Making custom textures for a CS is nice, but it seems like it would be time consuming. However it may be worth it.

Can I use xnormal if I only have a low poly version of my model?

I don't see why you would? Xnormal is made for baking high to low poly, you can't bake a normal map from a low poly onto a low poly as it won't really make a difference.
