The previews all remind me of the giant worm sequence from Penumbra. Is the whole game like that? Or is it only a couple of times for effect, like Penumbra?

Like Penumbra it is a blend of gameplay styles, so the whole game is not like that.

The game is final. Meaning it both starts and completes the story.
