The atmosphere. To be honest, the game doesn't scare me that much, but they still did a mind-boggling job on creating an unsettling atmosphere.

Atmosphere is really spooky, but nothing else in the game scares me, except monsters... Somehow even through I think that I shouldn't be afraid of them, I still am... ESPECIALLY BRUTE... That thing is just... Uhh, even seeing it in the level editor just gives me creeps...

Atmosphere definately did it for me. It's been a while since a game has given me nightmares. I only remember one, I was stuck at the end of a dead-end hallway and one of those Mr. Face things was coming at me. He tried to eat my head or something with that big-ass mouth of his, and I woke up screaming to the dog licking my face. I gave him a bunch of treats and apologized for smackin' him in the face the split-second before I fully woke up.
