Just a simple question, is blender better than autodesk maya or it depends on it?

Blender is more something you should use when you're getting into 3D modelling. Then you move onto other applications.

Blender is neat for being free, but it is inferior to most other products, I wouldn't say start with blender and move to maya as it will only make things more complicated when moving over.
If you want to start of, do some research on Autodesk 3DS Max, Autodesk Maya and MODO
Pick the one you feel looks more suitable for how you want to work, and learn from there.

Blender is a bad application for exporting to the HPL Engine(s). I made an AMAZING textured mesh in Blender and it simply refused to show up in HPL3.
Maya is the program Frictional uses, it also has the same camera movements as in HPL3, so yeah! I don't move to Maya because I've already learned so much with Blender that it would be a waste to quit on it...

Frictional is not exclusive to maya, during my internship I used max and that worked perfectly fine with HPL3, I know Aaron uses MODO.

I haven't gotten into importing models and it's been awhile since I have. Is there a specific collada plugin I need for max 2015 or is that not supported?

3D's max has Autodesk Collada build right into it, no need for a plugin.
