RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - Alardem - 10-31-2013 Could it be that Googolplex exists in the same dimension as Alexander's? He appears to believe all the insane shit we see in fiction is REALITY. If anything, the expanded universe is more fantasy than sci-fi, where a lot of things have little to no scientific explanations. Having dragons doesn't make it fit into the ''fantasy'' genre per se though. What part of the expanded universe has no scientific explanations? They even tried to explain how the force works (which made many SW purists annoyed), they've explained (lightly) the robotics and A.I, clones, etc. The force has to do with Midi-chlorian counts, testing special children's blood to see how high it was and if they could be trained as jedi. Lovecraft is considered science fiction (and a host of other genres), so his influence in Penumbra and HOW the influence was used made it a game that could be categorized as a sci fi videogame (again, aliens and their way of seeing the world). As for Amnesia (both of them), they're also influenced by Lovecraft but in a different manner and tone. The same ingredients are there (entities/aliens from other dimensions) but they're used in a very gothic way. Remember when Palpatine's spirit tried to possess a child? The Old Republic in general is stuffed with obviously magic things like cursed artifacts, alchemy, spellbooks and so on. Yeah, everything is vaguely explained with just "force", but it's pretty obvious that many of those things are far from reality. Ugh... let's get back to SOMA.. Yeah, everything is vaguely explained with just "force", but it's pretty obvious that many of those things are far from reality. The generalized explanation is ''powerful sith users were so powerful that they left Midi-chlorian pockets that screwed with the surroundings". These people used the force in novel (and forbidden) ways and willed the force into artifacts. And as for ''spellbooks'' they viewed the force as ''magic'' during those ages, while then the whole Midi-chlorian counts thing was discovered. Not that bad of an explanation considering we're talking about an universe where english is considered the humans' standard use language and there's no explanation (that I know of) that the humans came from earth or if they just popped into existence and they all just spoke english. lol But agreed, lets just go back to Soma. X) It's like they needed to make it believable, so they made up some bullshit that would NEVER work with physics. Nobody knows where they come from and where their home-world is. And they don't speak English. Whenever they speak English they actually speak "intergalactic basic". So now you know ^^ RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - Cuyir - 10-31-2013 (10-31-2013, 10:53 PM)Mechavomit Wrote:(10-31-2013, 10:45 PM)Cuyir Wrote: The generalized explanation is ''powerful sith users were so powerful that they left Midi-chlorian pockets that screwed with the surroundings".Yeah, but that's such a forced explanation, don't you agree? Intergalactic basic just sounds like english lol; yes yes, I know where you're coming from (ie, they speak some alien language, basic, that we, the viewers/readers, see as english) but that's lame lol. As for the midi-chlorian thing: not that forced honestly. They make it believable enough, just like Lovecraft's explanation of some things were ''the human mind can't fathom it or describe it''. RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - Mechavomit - 10-31-2013 (10-31-2013, 10:58 PM)Cuyir Wrote: ''the human mind can't fathom it or describe it''.That's not forced at all! lol. puns. But you know what? Who cares. It doesn't matter, does it? There are different view-points, both magic and sci-fi are awesome, anyway. You can see SW as both! We know that SOMA is sci-fi. The game this thread is about... RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - Cuyir - 10-31-2013 (10-31-2013, 10:59 PM)Mechavomit Wrote:(10-31-2013, 10:58 PM)Cuyir Wrote: ''the human mind can't fathom it or describe it''.That's not forced at all! It works so well because it makes sense though. Think about it. Every single alien being people have created have looked like SOMETHING on this planet. Real aliens would probably look like something we've never seen or imagined. So that's where his ''the human mind can't fathom it'' comes into play. Every single thing we've created as humans are influenced from things we've personally seen and are aware of. It's a mental impossibility of sorts to imagine how something from another dimension would actually look like. Especially when you consider our senses might not be good enough to perceive them in their entirety.... Lol like we give a fuck. Also, midichlorians never happened. George Lucas get's a time out in the time out square for doing that. Pretty sure Frictional will have no explanation given for why most of the stuff does stuff. That's part of the fun. |
