Because of the "BONUS ITEM SOUND" when you pick it up, i'm sure it's one of many bonus items you find in the game, and (a wild guess) in the end of the game, it shows how many you found or something.

If you read the email in the flow, you'll find it says this in the bottom email
"-Something Something artifacts; 27 (now believed to be somehow related to the contents of the recently discovered tomb)
-somethign artifacts: 10 (Of little to the A(something) but, for some reason, of great collectible value to the lower caste)
-T(something) Tomb"
The file also talks about how their base is within 1/2 mile of the 1973 explosion, caused by a 'Crazed miner' and how, while the base is nearly self sufficient, was quite vulnerable to being found out 2 years ago with high amounts of shipping for materials needed to make the base.

how do you get into the computer room? as soon as I touch the door, I get that orange glow and the game is over.

Or, you can use an object to push open the door such as a cereal box.
The script activates when the player 'touches' (aka: clicks) on the door, not by getting close toit.

get all artifacts to get the password to the super_secret.exe file in the installation folder
you get some nice stuff there,but hoped for more
