It's probably got something to do with how the Grunt is the first monster you encounter. It's essentially symbolic of the game, I feel. The Brute, in my opinion (Oh boy, opinions on the internet), is less daunting due to the fact that his look is a bit more generic than the Grunt. Not saying he's generic entirely, but the Grunt seems to have more of an impact on people. I'd say it's due to his buildup and presentation. His presence is shown to the player much more clearly than the Brute, what with multiple clear glimpses at his silhouette. He's also more prominent story-wise, teaming up with two others to capture Daniel.

Actually the Kaernk was the first monster I encountered. I know that there's a Grunt in the Archives, Wine Cellar, and Refinery but I never came face to face with it.
