It'd also be too small of a catastrophe. Some 3000 died in the WTC-attack whilst millions died in the other catastrophes mentioned.

I don't really see how it's related to Mandus' kids either, other than them being brothers.

Also, as all the other quotes are seemingly metaphors, I would think that this one is as well.

The machine tells Mandus that his two sons will die in WW1, in the Somme I believe. Fall in the sense of dying.

That's really creepy. Just imagine touching the orb and seeing all of that and much more within one moment.. all of the horrible things of the 20th century. That would be the scariest thing ever!
No wonder he wanted avoid this.
