Not so much taught as required. If you aren't genuinely happy (which is nearly impossible) then you need to be an expert deception artist otherwise you just disappear. It's shocking how closely North Korea parallels Oceania from Nineteen Eighty-Four, which is maybe what makes the book so scary to modern readers (at least to me.)
