I guess I'll post an update here, now, after 4 years. I recently decided to revisit this as I knew of some potential improvements to the process of displaying animation. Basically instead of setting active/inactive for each frame, it teleports them between two locations. This improves performance which means you can run videos at a much higher resolution and framerate.
