Are you saying the main_settings.cfg in Documents/Amnesia/Main is empty? If so, then that's definitely the issue, though I don't know why it has happened. Perhaps the file is write protected or something.

Go to the Steam folder at Program Files and try to run the game directly from the .exe, that is from Amnesia.exe. Does it work?

Additionally, perhaps try running it as an administrator? If the game does not start, then yes you can delete that file and it will revert to the first-start phase.

I deleted the file but now its just crashing everytime I click on 'continue' like it doesnt want to load the map or checkpoint.
also, some kind of 'dev_user' profile has been automatically created which is playable.

Strange how that user has been created unless you made it yourself. Yes, there might also be a first_start_flag file that you should also delete so that the game starts anew. It's simply to check whether it has started for the first time. Perhaps that is required for it to save the settings.

It seems that my old saves are corrupt or something, they won't load. but it's ok, I can live with it that I have to start over. I wasn't that far anyway.
