Ah, this may prove a little difficult then. SOMA does not officially support Intel HD graphics.
From the Graphics Card Troubleshooting Guide, look at Section 2 and 4. If you are below the required OpenGL version in Section 2, you will need to update your Intel HD Graphics drivers on your computer. Beyond there, not too much can be done.

Okay, I went through upgrading to 8.1 and now it's working. Apparently there was something happening my laptop wasn't telling me was out of date. thx for your guys' help

That reminds me, I believe there was some severe bug on Windows 8 that wasn't present on 7 or 8.1. It might have been related to graphics. I can't remember.
