The problem is not the engine, since it is fully capable of animating. The problem is the actual effort required to animate facial features.

So, what I gather here, is the engine cannot draw detailed facial animations?
This leads me to think human NPCs are very unlikely then?

Ok, that would be very unlikely, but look what I found:

You can see there "lip synch fixing" (At Peter's section)
Maybe there will be facial animations after all?
