RE: Stuttering, Small freezes and framerate Issues - jens - 09-16-2013

So today we think we managed to find the cause for the slowdown. Why it seems to only occur for some type of Radeon HD 5000 is not certain yet. Anyway here is a new test!

Remember, if you used an earlier test then you have to revert the changes done by it before testing this version. Just to make sure there is not a new issue due to files from different tests.

New test:
http://thedarkswarm.com/downloads/public...utter6.zip

How to test:
- Download file and unzip it. Then copy/move the contents of the folder into the game directory. If you do this correct Windows will prompt you to overwrite and merge files and folders. Do this (but warning that you will destroy your regular install and will have to redownload if you want it back later.). You can find the location of the game folder in Steam by right-clicking on the game, properties, last tab and click browse local game files.

- You now have to delete the file My Documents/Amnesia/Pig/main_settings.cfg. The game will create a new one with the new settings.

- Launch the game using the launcher, use the settings as detected and do not tweak them. That is use low, medium or high as suitable for your setup.

- Start a new game and go into options and turn off vsync and adaptive sync (also make sure you are not forcing it in the graphic control panel). This to make sure your test is not due to the computer not capable or running at 60FPS.

-Finally start a new game. This test only works with the first level.

When reporting back, please include your system specification with:
OS, Graphics Card, CPU & RAM. Also say what settings you used in the launcher (low, medium or high).

Same here. That link is poofed.

Oops, forgot I named it 6 instead of 5 to not be mixed up with the changed version of 4 that pluto did and named 5.

@Jens: I have a couple of questions :
- What does ForceCacheLoadingAndSkipSaving="false" do?
- Are the piano, phonograph, telephone, kids supposed to be invisible?

P.S.: I got some improvement. Wink

It makes sure that the updated map I provided is used and not the cache version you have with the game. And yes those are supposed to be missing, it is animations and skinning that we have narrowed it down to so just want to confirm it.

One more thing: correct me if I'm wrong. If I load an existing game, I will experience stutters until the game loads the next level. So in the following levels the stutters will be gone or (most likely for me) rare.

Jens, is it possible to remove the intro for those stutter fixes? I don't have a problem testing the game 10 different times but it's impossible to watch this intro any more. Maybe comment-it out for now? It would save time and allow more testing.

System 1:

Note: On this system, I'm using the first setup from Humble Store with no previous updates (like the USB + Adaptive vSync fixes) and then I apply stutter6fix. Is that a problem?

CPU: i3-2310M
RAM: 4GB
OS: Windows 8 x64
Launcher: High
vSync: Both OFF
GPU: Nvidia GT 540M
  • Default: Lots of stutter
  • Stutter6Fix: 2 stutters (*)
System 2:

CPU: i5-3570K
RAM: 8GB
OS: Windows 8 x64
Launcher: High
vSync: Both OFF
GPU: Nvidia GTX 660 Ti
  • Default: Very little stutter
  • Stutter6Fix: Perfect!
(*) I have noticed that there are 2 places where I am always getting a stutter. One is at the bathroom and one when crouching for the fist time inside that path after acquiring the lantern.

Attached, I'll try the new patch and the adjust the settings stated by plutomaniac

So I installed patch 6, followed all of the installation instructions

First run of the game was 100% smooth, no issue or stutter whatsoever

But just as I suspected would happen, I restarted my computer and loaded my saved game from first run and the game started stuttering again, not the every second while walking stutter, but probably every other second type stutter.

As I already said, you don't have to uninstall the game every time. It's not needed and you are getting tired for no reason. You can simply edit your current main_settings.cfg with the values mentioned above (first try 4096 & 8192 as lower than that will most probably cause sound issues), make a new profile and start a new game.

Tried each of those values with the patch 6 in place, 1024 - 4096 gave major sound issues and mouse lag. 16384 Gave major mouse lag. 32768 Doesn't work as it's the default value
