Here, take a cookie: RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - A.M Team - 08-25-2015 I really want to know if I just need an upgrade to 64 bit to run soma. Can't say with 100% certainty, but I can't see why it wouldn't atleast run. The GT8800 still provides plenty of oomph for less taxing games (not to downplay the beauty of Soma) Won't be running at max settings though. OT: Like all previous Frictional Games, I'm going into Soma completely blind. The hype's started to build now it's close to release date :3 RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - MrSteve - 08-25-2015 You'll certainly be able to play it, but I imagine (from what I've seen) you're going to encounter a lot of problems in the outdoor environments and places where a lot of fast paced action is going on. Those will probably chug like a sea trawler. RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - plutomaniac - 08-25-2015 (08-25-2015, 12:06 PM)TheDoctorPoo Wrote: I really want to know if I just need an upgrade to 64 bit to run soma. First off, you shouldn't have a 32-bit operating system with 4GB of RAM. It can't take advantage of such a RAM amount, you need 64-bit. And yes, SOMA requires x64 according to specs/Thomas. So, either way (SOMA or not), I suggest you format to x64 Windows. Noone can vouch with certainty that you will be able to run SOMA. Fact is you are below system requirements. Unofficially, I believe it will work. The choice is yours. RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - kojack - 08-25-2015 (08-25-2015, 10:59 AM)plutomaniac Wrote: Thing is, there is a Windows restriction as well on how much memory can be allocated per application at maximum. For x86 applications it's 2GB. 2GB is the default for 32 bit apps, but if the Large Address Aware flag is enabled on the executable, it can use whatever the OS isn't using (when on a 32 bit OS, probably around 3GB) or 4GB (when on a 64 bit OS). RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread - Googolplex - 08-25-2015 (08-25-2015, 03:17 PM)kojack Wrote: 2GB is the default for 32 bit apps, but if the Large Address Aware flag is enabled on the executable, it can use whatever the OS isn't using (when on a 32 bit OS, probably around 3GB) or 4GB (when on a 64 bit OS). That's correct. I already showed how to flag the Amnesia.exe to address the full 4GB instead of 2. This is very easy and can be applied to every exe. But that only makes sense for really big games that require a lot of RAM to cache resources. But to switch to 64-bit is of course, the best method. Today, nobody should use a 32-bit OS, because all CPUs since Pentium 4 HT from 2003 supports 64-bit. And every 64-bit Windows is also 32-bit compatible (no longer 16-bit so you need an installer to setup old games). I have a question on topic: It is really nice to give us a DRM-free copy on GOG, but what about Humble Store? And is the Steam version also DRM-free? That means can I play SOMA without login at Steam just by applying the Launcher? |
