RE: USEFUL SOFTWARE | Free, Open Source, Commercial - Traggey - 04-19-2015 Just make a group in your steam library, move all games you've finished to that. I guess I'll use Collectorz since I have license for it. RE: USEFUL SOFTWARE | Free, Open Source, Commercial - Paddy™ - 04-19-2015 Have you checked out Backloggery, IIPEE? If you're like me and enjoy having applications which aren't glued to the system registry, check out PortableApps.com. If any of my software suggestions below have a portable option, either from PortableApps.com or their own portable build, I'll include a P next to the OS. Spoiler below!
That should be enough for one post haha. RE: USEFUL SOFTWARE | Free, Open Source, Commercial - Yuhaney - 04-20-2015 (04-19-2015, 07:12 PM)Paddy™ Wrote: Have you checked out Backloggery, IIPEE? I've been rather paranoid about downloading software from the internet lately, as I've been exposed to viruses and malware before on my computer (luckily I was able to remove the malicious content before deciding to wipe my computer.) Nowadays I sometimes have a reoccurring nightmare moment in my dreams where I witness my computer being taken over by a virus and not being able to stop it. It's terrible. I thought about getting some free software to use like GIMP, but because of my paranoia I feel really hesitant (and scared) to attempt software downloads off the internet. RE: USEFUL SOFTWARE | Free, Open Source, Commercial - Mudbill - 05-11-2015 Some of these have a good reputation, so you're pretty safe to download them. Generally, just try to avoid shady, small, too good to be true kinda software. Don't click ads or install promoted addons and try to stay away from programs that cheat systems or do illegal things, like generate keys or serials, because from what I gather, they are more likely to contain malware, if they are anything else at all to begin with. I say you should just get some good antivirus software. If you're unsure of the download, run it through https://www.virustotal.com/ and you can also try setting up a virtual machine for sandbox testing if you expect it has a virus or are curious if it's a false positive. But generally, I don't think you need to worry about such. If you get something that is open source, you'll most likely not get anything bad. CC-licensed programs are also usually a safe bet. And, of course, something with a certain amount of positive reputation, like GIMP, should be totally safe. The only time I see something with these criteria being malware is when you download it from a third party provider or (in the ultra rare cases) when the website has been compromised. Avoid websites like softpedia and those with download managers and bloatware to the rims. Always check to see if you can get the software from the original website. There you go, you should be totally safe. RE: USEFUL SOFTWARE | Free, Open Source, Commercial - Yuhaney - 05-11-2015 If you have any hesitation always Google around. Any software with high reputation (free or commercial) have a Wikipedia page. From there is usually also a link to the official homepage. I've never had any issues doing this way. |
