The shooting mechanics really needed some tuning, but the original purpose of the game was to set out to explore the psychiatric impacts of fighting a war, which I thought it completed pretty admirably. It is very long, but never drag things out. To make a game longer means not it will automatically lose impact. You are right, that most games failed by that, but as be can see from some other games, it is possible to fill a long game with interesting stuff. I never actually had a problem with the shooting itself. I thought it felt good. I don't play a ton of shooters, though. As far as the game's themes goes. I think they were trying to aim more specifically at modern war-themed shooters than giving any message about actual war. They tackle a lot of tropes made popular in CoD-like titles and flip them on their heads.
