[/font]It's embaressing. I know where they are and I read the walkthrough but I just can not get the cotton out. [font=Arial]

You'll need to back track a bit and find the "office" and in there you might find an interesting chest first with a book inside it.

Do you mean the Big Book of Explosives? I found it but I really just can not figure out how to get the string out of it's box. What am I doing wrong? I can not seem to pull the box out or reach into it.

If you have it then clicking on the box of strings should be the only thing you need to do, when looking at the box there should be a hand in a picking posture as an icon and you can pick the string.
make sure you really have the book(maybe you died after picking it or something, but I think it saves when you leave the room with the book) and also look in your inventory so that you don't already have the string, the icon for it(if memory serves me right) is quite thin and might be hard to see.

Thanks again I finally passed it. As it turns out I did not have the book I must have been playing on the wrong save file.
