Which game did you find scarier? - The Rock Worm - 07-23-2012

Now I've played Amnesia: The Dark Descent and did get a bit nervous in various parts. I haven't played Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. This game also has scary monsters, but also allows the played to have weapons. So, is it scarier than Amnesia or vice versa?

Call of Cthulhu is not mainly a horror game.
I also never played this, but I will look to buy it soon.

But I think that Call of Cthulhu is not the best opponent for Amnesia.
There are by far better games like Silent Hill, Siren, Project Zero, Haunting Ground, Obscure etc.

The Japaneses are good at horror, but a shame, most of them are not avaiable for PC.

I just found some facts about the game from a website.

Key Features:

* Diverse array of levels from quaint towns to alien locations, including Deep One City
* Dynamic Sanity system resulting in hallucinations, panic attacks, vertigo, paranoia, and more!
* Incredibly detailed real-time graphics with atmospheric lighting and dynamic shadows
* Intelligent gameplay involving puzzle solving as well as combat and exploration
* 1920s weaponry and vehicles as well as evil artifacts and alien technology
* Lovecraft's famous monsters and locations

The game sounds that it's true to the Lovecraft world, has puzzles, and even has a sanity system. I guess you could meet a monster that is immune to your weaponry and that (plus its appearance) drives you nuts.

The first half of DCOTE was very atmospheric, and the denizens of the city still creep me out when I think of them. But about half way through the game it turned into an FPS, no me gusta nada. I did enjoy the amount of Lovecraftian Lore Bethesda threw into it; I'm not very familiar with H.P., so that kept it interesting for me.

I didn't play the whole DCOTE, it started of creepy and atmospheric but then (like Andy said) it turned into a FPS, I prefer Amnesia.

FPS is First Person Shooter isn't it?

It sounds like the first half is Amnesia-like (which is good). Now if some of the monsters had a hide so tough that bullets bounced off it, wouldn't it be as if you had no weapon at all (like Amnesia)?

Something that's been bothering me, guns/being able to fight back=/=not scary. Silent Hill 2 is considered one of the scariest games ever (the scariest to some) and it has weapons. Sometimes it can even make a game scarier, watching your ammo slowly go away and realizing you won't be able to fight back soon. It's all in the execution, but saying "this game is scarier than this game because you can't fight back" is stupid.

Never got to enjoy Call of Cthulhu. Too many technical issues and I hear its pacing and design falls apart later in the game. Definitely worthy of checking out, though. I love the opening moments up until the first "chase" sequence.

But I was scared more in Amnesia simply because I was able to enjoy the game overall much more.

I have never played Call of Cthulhu. :|

So I voted Amnesia.

That's sort of how I feel. You can still have weapons, but know that either they won't last long or be useless against the truly dangerous enemies (which conveniently appears when your ammo is low Tongue ).
