Everywhere I look people say the first half of SAO was pretty decent, but then got screwed up completely in the second half due to ridiculousness, and a bad villain.

Sure, but don't dare to judge the anime from the first half, cos it all comes down with the second.
You'll notice the difference, the difference from decent to crap.
Even the second season hasn't learnt from the mistakes.
And the last episode at least assured it.

@Kreek do you watch anime with chinese subs?

Nope, mostly I watch them with English subs. The only anime that I have watched with Chinese subs was Attack on Titan just because it was the language all of my friends were watching it in during its air.

So I just finished Love Stage.

It was a great anime. Like all BLs, it's rather cheesy and unrealistic, but unlike most others, it actually deals with some important themes like family and pursuing one's passions.
