Specifically the line about direct rendering? I am not sure if the open source drivers provide enough 3d support to play penumbra. You may have to I stall the commercial drivers. Also note that the 9250 is not technically supported by penumbra. Can you try the binary ATI drivers from http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html As from the HPL.log it looks as though there is no fragment shader support in the open source drivers.
