I just can't wrap my head around Howard death. Why did he do it? Because of what the Tuurngait told him?

I assume it is probably from what the Tuurngait told him, yes, but also from the hopeless situation. Risk of infection, risk of being killed by the infected, and no hope of rescue. Sounds like a good justification for suicide if there ever was one.
