It probably isn't getting to the point where it can create the HPL.log. What happens when you run the game from the executable's directory? You can get there by going to the games properties in Steam, then going to the Local Files tab and clicking the Browser Local Files button.

I'm running a 32-bit Windows XP system with a Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT graphics card.

Your graphics card and operating system are not supported by the game. Even if you manage to run the game with the latest Nvidia drivers (that's were the problem is) it won't be playable. Even Amnesia TDD was not playable with such a graphics card.

Really? I thought someone else in this discussion said they were running the same OS and were able to play it.

I didn't say whether the game is playable at that sentence. I said that in case of problems no official support can be given. That's what I mean when saying unsupported.
