the HTML page of the unknown project says in its description code:

"Welcome to the next frictional game, a site with information about our next currently unnamed game project with the working title Unknown. The game will follow in the footsteps of the acclaimed horror games; Penumbra: Overture & Penumbra: Black Plague. Stay tuned for more information as the game is developed towards its early 2010 release!"

2 years is probably the same time it would have taken to create Penumbra, should it have not been made into episodes.

This is good news since they have enough reserves to last them two years!

Quote:"We intend to give players a lot of freedom in our upcoming game", explains Thomas Grip, co-founder and lead programmer at Frictional Games. "Instead of following a laid out route we want players to choose for themselves how they want to progress and how deep they want explore various aspects of the game world"

The two goals of deep atmosphere and game freedom are somewhat contradictory. Also as said above, the job is so much harder for developers and, most importantly, for the story writer. I never found games trying to act like real world with lots of freedom very catching. Players imagination has the ability to compensate for linearity. It works in literature.

Either way can't wait to see how you guys get on and lay down my hands on your new title.

How will you guys separate this game from Penumbra? By looking at the art and it pretty much looks the same, especially the picture of the guy with the flare.

There will tons of difference! For example, that is not a flare, it is a torch Smile

Other quick examples:
While Penumbra was more of a "solve puzzle to get of the room" kinda of a game, the new project will be more action based when it comes to puzzle solving (no minguns or anything). Also, Penumbra kept u on a linear path most of the time, there will be more player choice and freedom in the upcoming project.
