Right,

I finally got around to do a video that shows how you use the Level Editor for the new game and then test the newly created level.

The editor has been created so that non-graphically skilled people (like me..) can create detailed levels by using sets of graphics created by artists. A lot of inspiration from the design of the editor has been taken from tile based 2D editors, where you use a set of tiles to create numerous variations of levels with a similar look. A good example would be any of the numerous adventure RPGs from the 8-bit/16-bit video game era.

What I will show in the demo is how I use a graphic set from a standard Castle style, create half a room, place and adjust light sources, graphical effects as well as add in some entities that the player can interact with.

It is also possible to do further things with the editor such as adding sounds and setting their properties. This is by no means the final version of the editor, it is all in heavy development but you can see that it has come so far to make it possible to create complete and interactive environments.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT ALL TOOLS AND GRAPHICS ARE WIP AND PLACEHOLDERS.

We'll show more of the editor as it develops and for the next video I(or perhaps someone else) will show the Model Editor, the editor we use to take a nice graphical object(say a door) and give it collision, joints and set properties to how it should behave when the player interacts with it.

Enjoy!

How long did it took you to do that level? Smile

RE: Jens, 2008-11-11, Level editor demo - WindexGlow - 11-11-2008

I'm guessing less than 30 minutes easily; even than a beginner who knows what he's doing can create the same room.

I have a lot more confidence in Frictional now thanks to this vid; originally I thought they were doing walls (were only 1 object would span an entire wall, instead of 20 sections with pillers)

The level editor looks simplified, easy to use, hotkeyed, and best part is it's realtime and not wireframe.
Looking great; now I'm looking forward to see how scripting will be done.

Seconded !!! :-D

To the devs :

Great work ! I suppose the enviroment you showed in the test level is similiar to those planned for Lux Tenebras. The level is clearly an old mansion or a castle.

I'm looking forward to playing your next creation, if it comes out sometime during 2010 (as you promised). You have now convinced me, that HPL2 will be more than a fitting succesor to the previous engine. :-)

Ooooh yeah, dats so cool.

Outta curiousity, are the controls shown for "your upcoming project." [Lux Tenebras?]

RE: Jens, 2008-11-11, Level editor demo - WindexGlow - 11-12-2008

I would bet money you'll see those models in Lux Tenebras. The maker of the video was obviously experienced with those models, or at least the style of things.

Some drapes would make the scene epi-cool though! Even if they were on the floor.

definately, should be a great expierience if we could actually use this tool for "lux Tenebras". It would Be like The best map editor i've used in ages.

RE: Jens, 2008-11-11, Level editor demo - WindexGlow - 11-12-2008

Yes, the tool will be availible (after a few months of constant begging) once lux tenebras is released.

Question; What were the PS symbols? Best thing that I could come up with was "Particle system' but doesn't make sense when you have 12 of them.

I hope there will be a Linux (and Mac) port Smile
