RE: SOMA - 10 days after launch - PiratesFr33k - 10-17-2015

I've been keeping a "The 25 Best Stories in Gaming" list for many years now.
It's a list spanning games from the golden era of DOS games until today.
I don't update the list that often because I put a LOT of thought into it. The 1998 adventure game Sanitarium has been my number one for many years now.

About 24 hours ago, I updated my list.
SOMA is my new number one.
From out of nowhere it's made it straight to number one!
I never thought this would ever happen with any game.

Thank you so much for this amazing experience, Frictional Games!!

Now I feel the strong urge to spend a lot of money on SOMA merchandise, so... where is it?? Big Grin

PS: Oh, and just in case you are interested in that list:

Spoiler below!
25. The Legend Of Kyrandia 2: Hand Of Fate (1993, Westwood Studios)
24. Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening (1993, Nintendo)
23. The Dig (1995, LucasArts)
22. Portal 2 (2011, Valve)
21. Zork: Grand Inquisitor (1997, Activision)
20. Gemini Rue (2011, Wadjet Eye Games)
19. Kana: Little Sister (2002, D.O. Corp.)
18. Figures of Happiness (2005, AngelSmile)
17. Alan Wake (2012, Remedy Entertainment)

Good list you got there.

I only have two things to say:
1. Keep putting work out on PS4 (and consoles in general), even if you just port Amnesia and its sequels.
2. I don't care if you take your time, but please make sequels. I've waited a long time for a game to go where Soma went thematically, and I really hope to see more.
c. The game is amazing.

According to the world, Planescape: Torment has the best story. (“What can change the nature of a man?”)
With Soma there is a serious competition.

Amnesia Pigs is my favorite story. Then SOMA. And then every other FG game.

RE: SOMA - 10 days after launch - boredgunner - 09-04-2016

Strange list with the classic Thief games which have very little in the way of story, and an odd lack of Penumbra. I have:
Spoiler below!

#10 - Fallout: New Vegas - Lonesome Road
#09 - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords (acknowledging its incomplete state)
#08 - Deus Ex: Human Revolution
#07 - Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason
#06 - Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
#05 - Silent Hill 2
#04 - Penumbra
#03 - SOMA
#02 - Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
#01 - Planescape: Torment

Anyway, I really hope SOMA did well with regards to sales. I remember FG had to sell quite a lot to break even. I randomly noticed today that it has less reviews on Steam than the newly released Deus Ex: Mankind Divided; of course this isn't surprising and there are many reasons to this (people are quick to downvote DXMD for its buggyness) but I worry nonetheless. I need more games from FG in my life!

I also believe there are articles about Frictional breaking even on SOMA.

Thanks for the reply, that site is interesting. So according to that, almost 250k owners on Steam which I guess means around 250k copies sold on Steam? And Frictional Games said they need almost 300k sales to recoup all costs. Over 3 million for Amnesia, impressive.
