Crashing in Overture - Carmex - 05-03-2010

I'm having a problem in the game where I open the door leading out of the incinerator area and the loading screen comes up with the message on it, and after a second of it appearing the game crashes. It can't be any of my hardware, and all my drivers are up to date. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

RE: Crashing in Overture - Bek - 05-03-2010

I have the EXACT same problem as you.

When you use the crowbar to progress, it begins to load the level (has text) and then CTD's.

I have attached the error log.

(Running steam version, also tried updating to 1.1, no help)

Windows 7 x64
ATI 4870
AMD 5200x2 (2.6ghz dual core)
4gb ram etc
running custom resolution. (1440x900)

Also on the Steam forums there is a similar thread for this problem.

Find anything useful from the steam thread?

RE: Crashing in Overture - jens - 05-05-2010

When did you buy Penumbra Overture and when did you start playing it? Did you get the crash when running the game from steam without installing any patches (that were not from Steam, such as a patch from our support)? Or did you install a patch before you even had a crash just to have the latest version of the game?

RE: Crashing in Overture - Carmex - 05-05-2010

I bought it about 7 months ago and started playing it 2 weeks ago. I haven't downloaded any patches or modified any of the files. All I've been doing is opening the game and playing it.

RE: Crashing in Overture - jens - 05-05-2010

Did you download the game 7 months ago or did you download it 2 weeks ago when you started playing? I'm asking these things because the only clue we have about the problem is that it either is that it could be linked to saved games for different versions or the "age" of the files.

See if it helps using the attached Penumbra.exe, you have to place it in the redist folder in the penumbra folder in I think SteamApps. Rename the old file first so you do not overwrite it!

edit--
oops, apparently I have been to cheap when setting the file size limit on zip files, but fixed now so file attached.

RE: Crashing in Overture - Bek - 05-05-2010

Hi Jens, thanks for the replies.

I downloaded it about 3 weeks ago - I had the crash on the latest steam patch and still after the 1.1 patch from your site. Also when I verified the steam files 42 files were missing, it apparently updated them however the crash was still there. (This was before 1.1)

Also I noticed Overture is part of the humble indie bundle, very nice.

edit: trying the new exe now.
edit2: IT WORKS AND I LOVE YOU! HeartHeartHeart

Indeed it does. Thank you jens. Now I can finally play through to the end (hopefully).

RE: Crashing in Overture - Bek - 05-06-2010

Amazing the level of support! Very very impressed. Now moving onto Black Plague Big Grin

RE: Crashing in Overture - Twobirds - 05-08-2010

Also made use of this! I bought Penumbra a while ago, and have only recently started playing through, so it seems like the same issue.

Thanks for the great game and the support!
