Im having the exact same problem, I just downloaded and replaced the .exe with the fixed version (steam download for the game), and attempted to play the game, game works fine up until i try to get past the door just after killing Red.
The Fixed .exe dosent seem to fix it for me.

Windows XP Pro 32 Bit.

Any help would be much appreciated i really want to keep playing.

I was experiencing random crash number 1, with the error message "Penumbra.exe caused an Exception_Access_Violation in module Penumbra.exe at 001B:0043037"

You're EXE fix seems to have worked for me. No crashes since installing it.

I am also having the crashing problem in Overture on the final door (using the crowbar. Use crowbar, text screen comes up, then crash).

Steam Version (Collectors pack, Bought 2 days ago).
Windows 7 Professional (32 bit)
Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 (Driver v 197.45)
Realtek HD Audio ALC888 (Driver V 6.0.1.6083)

Tried your above patch, and I still have the crash. Also tried the patch and deleted the settings.cfg (and made no video adjustments). Still crashing.

I did not have a single crash at all playing the entire game, except for this one.

Is there any other info I could provide?

Seriously frictional games needs to pick up there game and
fix these kind of issues, a simple patch for steam and none steam version would do wonders, when so many people are getting the same error and are unable to even finish the game, you would think the game devs would take some notice and do something a bit more permanent, i'm really just pissed because i was enjoying the game and now because of the damn door error i can only stare at the door and go no further.

If the exe in the original post does not work, please try this one, but please first test the original.

I have Penumbra Black Plague from Gamersgate and I'm getting some crashes at random times and places. The message that appears is "Penumbra.exe caused an EXCEPTION_ACESS_VIOLATION in module atioglxx.dll at 001B.696BBD0D, atiPS()+6230349 byte(s)". I have updated the drivers but I get the same errors. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 in a Toshiba Satellite laptop. Does this fixed exe work for Black Plague or just for Overture?
