Story wise, best game i've played this year - André Campana - 05-30-2016

I took 14 hours to finish the game, the story was amazing, graphics were 'meh' but ok.

One thing i want to mention upon everything else was the terrible performance i had, even on a respectable rig that i have.

I had to run the game on 800x600 but i preserved the graphic options on max. At the end, the game was running at 400fps with so many stutters that it felt it was running at 20 fps. Not to mention the 20 second long spikes i had. The stutters were so bad that at one point i felt like running to the toilet to throw up.

Also at the end, thanks Frictional Games not to make the worst game ending of 2015, beyond Outlast level, by letting us meet Catherine inside the ARK.

Well that's all, apart from the terrible performance(not even putting the graphics to minimum settings helped) it was a great game with a great story. At one point i even felt emotionally attached to Catherine.

Thanks again Frictional Games for your time, to develop such an amazing game as SOMA was.

Cheers.

Sorry to hear about your performance. I'm sure the experience would have been better if it ran properly.

Obviously this doesn't happen to everyone. Personally I had no major issues like that. But if you tell your specs, perhaps we can figure out what caused it. I do have some suspicions. SOMA and HPL in general (the engine) is very picky with what it likes. It has again and again struggled with certain AMD GPUs. Do you perhaps have one?

Intel Core i5 2500K
16GB of RAM
GTX750Ti 2GB

Far Cry 3 on Ultra at 80 fps no lags. How can SOMA run this bad? Not even cranking the graphics all the way to minimum helped

For comparison, mine are:

Intel Core i7 4790K 4.0GHz
8GB 1866MHz RAM
GTX970 Strix 4GB

Not sure if the issue lies within some of these components or if it's something else. Your specs should theoretically be perfect. If anything, maybe it's the 2GB vid mem, but probably not, so I'm leaning more towards "something else."

I monitored VRAM usage during the entire time i played the game, it never went above 932 MB, i have 2 gigs

Also in the user_settings.cfg file for SOMA there's a line related to VRAM limit, i made sure to set it to 2048

Ok, i've found where the problem is. It's the texture settings. If i set it to High the game becomes almost unplayable like before, if i set it to Medium everything is fine. Ironically, VRAM usage never reaches 1GB(I have 2GB) when textures are on High, RAM usage never reaches 6GB(I have 16GB). So i have no idea what is going on. But i believe i can play the game again, and enjoy more somehow.
