Perhaps the shadow really is only Daniels own shadow. Just that it comes to life cause he goes insane!

That would be interesting only it isn't possible due to the fact that the shadow hunted other people who took the orb and may not have comited such horrific acts as daniel did ( which could be seen as the shadow beeing daniel's guilt catching up to him).
And the shadow kills other people so it coulnd't only be Daniel's guilt.

Maybe the Shadow didn't leave at all? Daniel survived yes, and at the time it would seem like a great victory. But maybe the Shadow stayed with him for the rest of his life? Killing everyone who he came in contact with, plaguing his dreams with nightmares.

A very severe punishment.

That makes sense although they talk of his redemption and cleansing through fire yadda yadda. Gives the feeling he was finally free.
