it's much better to leave it open to interpretation, then everyone is happy with their own theories rather than frictional just saying "Yeah, no, you're all wrong, it was actually just x" or something like that.

Yeah I think the idea is that Philip doesn't even know whats real or fake so neither should the player to keep the immersion. The way I see it is that Philip is under complete control by the Tuurngait and they're either giving him the option to die or to help them destroy the evidence. Which is a bit strange seeing how they stopped red from burning up, I guess its because he passed the tests...
