Well, in my case, there is a brute in the Choir which stayed around for a very long time after showing up... maybe that's the one. Not sure though. I really didn't felt like staying long in the Choir...

The tar is just used to help the orb stick in the receptacle, not piece the orb together. It is kind of weird though, I always wondered why the orb wouldn't be able to just fit in the receptacle as is...

You will be afraid. Very much so. :D And that fear is what will keep you alive throughout the game. Ooor, make you freeze in a panic and get butchered. Depending on how you react to fear. :D
