I don't know if you've figured this out already, but try running oalinst.exe located in Steam/Steamapps/common/penumbra. Make sure you restart Steam, as well.

You guys have to try SCP-087. It's a free indie game made by somebody in their spare time using the Unity3D SDK; only a couple megabytes. There is an ending, although the floor it occurs on is random....

It's also worth mentioning that running the game to immediately launch into your map (aka dev mode) will also make notes, key names, etc. not appear.
