A Laugh in the Darkness - cannot go on...

Ok so in the short story A Laugh in the Darkness and I am in the area where you have 3 hallways to go down. I have gone down all of them each one triggered either a sound or event... I have 1 key in my inventory but it does not work with any of the doors. I guess I am either being dense or the game has some bug... it is probably an end user (me ) issue though.
