I don't usually make excuses for piracy (though I don't have any qualms with it usually) but there is almost nothing more justifiable than pirating 3D modeling software. If you want to get far in modeling at all you need to have the right tools and all of them are criminally overpriced. There is no reason to deprive yourself of a proper educational experience just because you have some moral problems. You can buy it later if you actually start modeling for a living because you may get in trouble for using unlicensed software at that point. Until then though just get used to the concept of 3D modeling and get some experience in it.

Their is nothing wrong with criminally overpriced -.-

And stop promoting Piracy. Blender is a perfectly good tool to use, sure it might be harder but it gets the job done. It's like saying you deserve a ferrari to go to work instead of a rinky dinky old car that works just as well.

If there were no difference then the commercial product would be out of business, wouldn't it?

Well if you enjoy getting fucked in the ass then power to you. All I'm saying is you shouldn't get so hung up on the moral dilemmas you may have if the result is you being familiar with the use of a perhaps more powerful and compatible program.

By the way, it is not like saying you deserve a Ferrari instead of an old car. It is like saying you deserve to learn how to drive on a "Ferrari" (placeholder for 'good, responsive car') than a less functioning one. I don't want to get into an argument about piracy (seriously - I won't respond; fair warning) but no matter what anybody says it is not stealing. Not in the legal sense nor the Biblical sense, because after piracy has been committed nothing material has been taken.

Ignorance, piracy and the control of the education system (and possibly others) by de-facto standardization is what makes commercial products like Maya and 3DS Max more popular, not the lack of capabilities.

Note how piracy is within the list, for the more you promote piracy of a product, the more you promote its popularity. The more popular it is, the less of a reason to bring down prices. The more popular it is, the more online communities revolve around it, in effect prolonging its popularity. By redirecting users to alternative products, you create competition. If you want to see reasonable prices, you need competition. Pirating a commercial product does not create competition for the pirated content.

Touché. You raise excellent points that I had not considered and you are right. Just for curiosity sake could you name at least one of the free programs you are referring to? I have dabbled in 3DS Max before (didn't pirate originally actually) and am curious to see if they do indeed hold up or overcome it like you say.

EDIT: Unless Blender is the best. I've tried it and it mystified me somewhat, though that was like 6 or 7 years ago; I wonder what it's like now.

If you export to OBJ and post it, i could do some quick texture work for it.

Blender is the only free alternative that i know of that can compete with the commercial ones. I've tried others, but they lack many things and i would not consider them capable of competing.

Since Blender 2.5, the UI and features have changed and improved dramatically. 6 to 7 years ago Blender was okay but not as great as it is today.

Cool thanks, I will definitely give it another try (been meaning to get into 3D modeling again anyway).

RE: Handgun/Pistol

Why hasn't anyone said this yet?...

You do not need to be in college, nor do you have to pirate 3DS Max and Maya. I do not go to college and I'm constantly modelling on Maya, which is free software if registered as a student. Simply register as a student (college or not, just put the name of your high school or wherever you learn) and sign up. Log in, and download a student version of your choice (I prefer Maya 2011). Install, and begin.

The only catch to this is that, as it is student software, it is illegal to sell your models or any material your models are in. But this is a modding forum, there should be ZERO money involved in the process. Once you intend on creating a game to be sold, THEN you must buy the software...

RE: Handgun/Pistol

Whooooaaaa Ok. I barley just checked out this thread (haven't checked it out ever since the day I created this thread) and all of a sudden there's a debate about piracy?

Listen guys, we don't need to argue or debate about this. All I said was "there's no tutorials" and "I tried Blender" and all that and someone else recommending Blender (Rapture). That's it. Then somebody else just brought up something about another program and that, as said by him, he doesn't make excuses about piracy. Sure if there was another program that I could use which would make modeling much easier, I would use it. However, if it has to come to piracy and, keep this in mind, I have NO experience with modeling, then why should I get it? Also, surely all of us has committed something with piracy at least ONCE. If you sincerely have not done ANYTHING that involves piracy, then jolly good for you, stay like that. If you have, then oh damn well. A ton of people have done it, and it'll just keep going and going. That's life. Piracy will ALWAYS exist with almost any program that comes out.

Blender, as seen from a lot of modelers around here, is being used by pretty much everyone. Blender is even the program "noob" modelers use (like me, but I still need to work out the kinks). Yes I know about the tutorials, thank for you linking me to them and/or telling me that there actually are tutorials (again, sorry if I seemed stubborn and lazy), and I'll try my best to learn modeling. And, before anyone says anything, NO I am not supporting piracy. Don't get my words mixed up. I'm just dropping this debate from here on out.

Please, let's just drop the piracy argument/debate, alright guys? Or the "this program is better at doing this than this other program (Maya vs. Blender)" arguments.

Let's just stay on topic, no?

However, I do thank you all for recommending me a couple of other programs, but I might ether stick to Blender or, as Statyk said, create a student license for Maya.

That looks like a good pistol!

Oh and someone asked about what type of gun I'd want. I would like it to be one of the pistols from around the 80s-90s (or like the gun in the picture above). Sorry for not stating that earlier. But one exception of a "modern" handgun would be the Glock.
