RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread
Quote:5 days until our sci-fi horror game SOMA is released. Until then ponder this:
A new mode of transportation has arrived: teleportation.
It works by analyzing all of your atoms and then rebuilding them at a new location. All your atoms are analyzed and rebuilt in the same instant and the process destroys the atom that was analyzed. Thousands of people have already tried this and reported feeling fine afterwards. Will you take a ride?
If your answer is no: Remember that all of your atoms gets replaced at least once during a lifetime. This is the same thing but faster.
If your answer is yes: How long a delay after analysis are you okay with your atoms being destroyed? A millisecond? A second? What is it that sets the limit?

RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread
Something else interesting, Soma has achievements https://twitter.com/ThomasGrip/status/64...3265195008
I'm not sure how achievements really add anything to a horror game like this but whatever, I'll just turn off the notifications. I feel like this decision was another one of those things to make the game more accessible
Also I just checked the steam page, where they have a very active forum, thomas even posts pinned topics on the 'somatic philosophy.' Interesting.
edit: just had a look at the steam forum. don't bother. it's a cesspool

RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread
My intuition is that teleportation would kill "me", and that consciousness is somehow tied to location/continuity.
Disturbingly, it's impossible to verify this. We can't trust the assurances of people who've used the teleporter.
A relevant comic.

Yeah, I'll be disabling the Steam overlay, too. I don't want my experience of SOMA to be interrupted by anything, least of all superfluous dreck like achievement notifications, regardless of how tastefully and tactfully they've been implemented.

RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread
About the teleportation thing, I don't believe all atoms in your brain are replaced ever
Unrelated, does anyone remember the average time it took for playtesters to finish amnesia before it came out? I want to compare the game lengths. Normally it takes me ~5 hours longer than the 'average' length because I spent so much time looking at everything

RE: The Ultimate SOMA Discussion Thread
If the teleportation machine does not destroy the atom it's analyzing, we get a cloning machine. By intuition the person entering a cloning machine will not feel that his consciousness had been teleported. I believe the teleportation machine kills the person entering it instead of teleporting the persons mind
