I have proof he is alive!

And I have proof he's not. Pretty much official proof.
First, that thing about the ashes: they quite obviously put it there before it was opened as there's no reason to wait until after Red's burning. In fact, Red doesn't exist in there - it's just a sound effect and there's nothing strange about the ashes being there all along.

However, I came to this thread at this hour to announce Red dead:
