I keep wondering what is up with the icon that appears to be some guy with a big beard and helmet.

Did you play the demo? From the intro sequence (fantastic artwork and voice acting btw, Frictional) it becomes apparent why such an icon was chosen. At least I think so.
I won't say anything in case you haven't seen it - I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise.
