Ignorance, piracy and the control of the education system (and possibly others) by de-facto standardization is what makes commercial products like Maya and 3DS Max more popular, not the lack of capabilities.

Note how piracy is within the list, for the more you promote piracy of a product, the more you promote its popularity. The more popular it is, the less of a reason to bring down prices. The more popular it is, the more online communities revolve around it, in effect prolonging its popularity. By redirecting users to alternative products, you create competition. If you want to see reasonable prices, you need competition. Pirating a commercial product does not create competition for the pirated content.
