For me, storyline is key to my progression and dedication to a game.

Well that would work unless many of segments were so different, almost as if the were designed by. . . DIFFERENT PEOPLE!
Making a custom story with a good story in 2-3 maps is completely do-able. Isle, which in my mind has one of the best stories of any custom story out there, did it in about that many maps.
I don't mean the number of the maps; I'm talking about them being designed by different people, and don't now point out that there are at least one or two good custom "stories" like this. I am aware of this, it's just that without any understanding of anything the player may not really feel fear. "Okay, you're in a scary place with scary stuff. AND THEN A SKELETON POPPED OUT!!!"
I suppose randomly waking up in an unfamiliar place that unsettles you would be scary, in real life. Cause then you worry about getting back home, and your life and all those other wibley-wubley important stuffs.
