Where do you live exactly? I don't know about North America but in South America (Paraguay at least) large spiders are almost non-existent in urban areas. Before I went there by far my biggest worry was whether I would have to share a room with a family of nefarious looking spiders but I didn't run into any at all, and I'm pretty sure South America has bigger and more dangerous spiders than North America (see:

Anyway off topic since everybody seems to be talking about spiders in general, I pretty much agree with Chronofox. They're fascinating creatures and quite cool looking, though I live in Iceland where the largest spiders are about twice the size of a dollar coin, so I don't have to deal with them regularly. I try to avoid them however because I have a minor fear of having things crawl on me, and I have a major fear of putting my hand or fingers in a crevice or hole and touching a spider. I love taking photographs of them from a safe distance though. I have a few if anyone is interested (sorry for the quality):
