Still, the flashlight does sound weird when trying to switch it on. I would expect a "click" sound, or maybe a short sizzling (Though that would be surprising too, with about 10V), but not a Science-Fiction-movie-malfunction-blip.

Oh, and I thought about my answer a bit. The caves might be warm, as Philip forgot to put on his coat (he mentions this later in Black Plague), and is not freezing inside the tunnels.
