Anyone know what's up with this?

"03_dungeon.hps" lines 1675 & 1677-1679

I think it was a removed scare sequence. If player entered/looks at the small room in the back, a scripted waterlurker appeared (disabled script area "AreaLurkyBooLook"). If player tried to climb up to safety, some random stuff from bookshelfs would drop down, pushing player back to water and at the same time the watermonster might disappear (check the script areas "Area_Punishment_" & script line 1734).
Fun scare actually, but probably removed just because it wasn't fitting in the scene.
