There was a story where happened the same to me. The waterlurker began to chase me climbing stairs, and I was just like:

FUCK!!!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

It even chased me by a hall.
But, I have no clue how did it happen or why. Maybe you have the stair or something in the liquid area and it can climb it.
