In certain religions aliens even play part in their beliefs. Honestly, I think you can learn a lot by comparing them with each other.

Now, basically, here's what you need for life: A moderately sized rock in the habitable zone of it's star system, a large atmosphere rich in a healthy mix of diatomic molecules, and water. You can isolate those planets and see if they have life. The problem being many of them are pretty darn far away(Measured in lightyears) So it will be a very long time before we can study them.
