One could still have scary sea/air monsters. Using your example, what if someone made a sea going 'Gatherer' and/or an air one?
I realized that as soon as I posted the comment ^^'' Yeah, deep sea-divers who mysteriously dissapear in the Bermuda Triangle or something. People who go missing there could actually be turned into sea monsters with really shriveled skin or something.
