Walking around in total darkness is a normal thing for me. I live in Iceland dude; In the winters it's dark pretty much 20 hours a day… There may be street lights here and there but on most of my postal routes I have to walk through areas that are almost completely dark. Besides, I'm not afraid of "abandoned buildings" because I don't believe in spirits or anything supernatural.
EDIT: Besides, why do you think in Amnesia and Penumbra you are constantly terrified to take another step? Personally, it's
not because there is nothing there in the darkness. I am afraid of the dangers that lurk therein. The only thing the darkness serves to do is create an unsettling atmosphere that sets up the scares; open areas in broad daylight are also capable of being extremely scary under the right circumstances.
