Dark Side, I think the key to creating a good character in your case would be to approach her characterization from a neutral point of view. Characterize her as an individual, not a "female". Give her a believable personality. Problems arise when creators use their characters to portray their opinion on what a woman "should be" (the concept of which is sexist in itself). Good luck!
