As far as weapons for Amnesia, I point to Penumbra: Overture. It had weapons, and it as re-assuring to have them. To really scare people, weapons shouldn't be in them (or at least broken by the time you find any so its useless). Now having a tool to break through walls or get past some puzzle, now that would be good. Some examples of this in Penumbra: Overture includes--
1: Making your own explosive to clear a cave-in to proceed to the next level/area.
2: Pickax was used to help break the rock in your way from escaping giant spider tunnels.
3: While technically not a weapon, a lighter was used to set off some oil on the floor to make a fire wall, keeping the spiders away from you.
