What programs do i need to make an custom object

I want to make my own objects, monsters etc. ( yes i know that it is harder than i might think). But i dont exactly know what programs i need. It seems like silo is a good choice for modelling a monster, but where do i animate it? In maya? What program applies textures to the uv?

could you help me with these questions and maybe can suggest some other modelling programs for me?
